About Us

Our Vision

The National Institute of Urban Management (NIUM) is committed towards professionalising urban management, rendering support to Urban Local Bodies and Government Departments in partnership with institutes of eminence. To address the social, economic, spatial and environmental challenges facing cities and towns, NIUM adopts a multi-disciplinary, multi-sectoral perspective with focus on:

  • Knowledge production in the form of applied research, advocacy studies, evaluation reports, etc.
  • Knowledge dissemination through training, panel discussions, conferences, workshops, IEC materials, etc.
  • Knowledge application through consulting, handholding and support to projects undertaken by local bodies and other stakeholders; etc.

NIUM seeks to provide technical support to Local, State and Central Governments and their institutions, organisations and agencies in effectively managing the challenges of urbanization. It seeks to harness the synergy between Government authorities and other stakeholders such as Universities, Research Institutes, Consulting Organizations, NGOs, Policy Advocacy Groups, and Independent Experts.

In the pursuit of its vision, NIUM intends to be (i) Technical and Professional, (ii) Autonomous and Self-financing, and (iii) Transparent and Accountable.
